Classroom Use of PowerPoint

Why should I use PowerPoint in my Classroom

Today's students need a diversity of experiences in the classroom. PowerPoint activities used in moderation can help provide that diversity. When teachers first started using PowerPoint in the classroom, some of them went overboard and used PowerPoint as part of every lecture or every activity on a daily basis. Using classroom PowerPoints in this way can lead to student boredom. Teachers need to look at PowerPoint as more than digital "lecture notes" and instead look at new ways they can use this classroom technology to enhance student learning.

Ideas for using PowerPoint in the Classroom

  • Bell Ringers and Exit Slip Activities

  • Daily classroom content

  • Check the software that came with your textbooks. Some textbook companies include a CD with pre-created classroom PowerPoints.

  • PowerPoint games such as Jeopardy can be used for reviews at the beginning or the year, before a test or state testing.

  • Modifications for students with disabilities. Teachers can print out the classroom notes so that a student with disabilities can focus on the teacher rather than focusing on writing down information from the PowerPoint and processing everything the teacher is saying.

  • Presentations for parents such as open house. Set the PowerPoint to run automatically so parents can watch the presentation. The PowerPoint might include school rules, school policies/procedures, classroom expectations, and other relevant information.

  • Student created PowerPoints

    • Book Reviews

    • Historical Person Presentation

    • Flash Cards

    • Digital Books - students can turn a story they have written into a digital story book.

    • Science Fair Presentations

    • Group Projects
